Sorghum and Corn – as Complementary as a 4×4 and a Formula 1
Whenever they choose between sorghum and corn, farmers should always consider their complementarity. Just like a sturdy 4×4 and an ultra-fast Formula 1, the two crops meet different needs, but prove to be indispensable for sustainable agriculture and food self-sufficiency.
As a plant that is more resilient to water stress and in poorer soils, sorghum is the ideal “ATV” in hot or low-rainfall areas. It provides economic stability even during difficult times, with moderate, but reliable yields over the long term. Unlike corn, sorghum does not depend on a perfectly optimized environment.
Conversely, corn is the “racing car” that excels in ideal conditions: fertile soil, abundant irrigation, and constant heat.
It allows one to obtain high yields, but remains vulnerable to weather hazards. Its effectiveness is at its peak wherever sorghum cannot follow it.
Why Combine Corn and Sorghum?
Sorghum covers the periods of water shortage, while corn thrives during the favorable periods. This smart diversification reduces loss risk, improves farm resilience, and provides flexibility based on the realities in the field.

As highlighted by Thierry Lecat, Business Manager for Western Europe with Advanta, during the European Sorghum Conference: “Sorghum is not a competitor of corn, but a strategic partner thereof, for a more resilient agriculture.” The actual choice will depend on local constraints, but the fact that the two crops complement each other makes them a winning combination.
