Conclusions from 2016 Congress

The 1st European Sorghum Congress: a founding act “Sorghum in Europe: real potential”

The 1st European Sorghum Congress was held on this theme on 3-4 November 2016 in Bucharest, Romania. The meeting was actually a “founding act” and brought together 250 sorghum professionals and experts from Europe and beyond. The Congress tackled topics as diverse as genetic progress and agronomy, markets and outlets, and agricultural promotion and policy.

Two days of analysis and debate leading to clear conclusions

We see strong development potential for sorghum in Europe that can be further strengthened in the future. However, while the conditions and factors for developing the crop have been identified, the Congress gave an opportunity to note the absence of momentum for tapping into them, as there was no organised or structured professional body to build a common project. This is why, at the end of the Congress, the main sorghum stakeholders from seed production to processing clearly expressed their will to come together at EU level.

Thus was the founding act of the “Sorghum ID” organisation, with the aim of uniting European sorghum stakeholders.
